Musical GrowthAround the time that America became the worlds' strongest superpower and new civil rights movements were taking place, a new style and sound of music was developed, called Rock n' Roll. Rock n' Roll inspired people to have a "free spirit" and to "let themselves go". This new way of thinking led to the creation of the hippie.

Rosemary Clooney
Rosemary Clooney was a popular singer and actress throughout the 1950's. Clooney sang and toured with with bands in the 1940's, but later signed a contract with Columbia Studios for a solo singing career. She also starred in the movie White Christmas (1954) and she also starred on her own TV show. Unfortunately, she experienced personal problems which influenced her career downfall in the 1960's. |
Chuck Berry
Chuck Berry was one of the most influential performers of the 1950's. Berry helped with the growth and evolution of rhythm-and-blues and Rock n'Roll, coming out with songs "Johnny B. Goode" and "My Ding-a-Ling". Berry was known for his distinctive sound and clever lyrics, which led to Berry's influential role in the development of rock n'roll. |
Elvis Presley
Elvis Presley was Rock n'Roll's first real superstar in the 1950's, which led to him becoming known as "The King". Presley developed a revolutionary new sound by combining blues, country, and gospel music. He was viewed as a bad influence on teens and rebels because he blended African American music with his music with a "natural sexuality". |
