Musical Growth
In the 1960's cassette tapes became more accessible to the public. They became cheaper than vinyl records and were more portable. The cassettes where around 3 dollars while vinyls were 6 dollars. The cassettes could play up to 30 minutes of music. They became more refined throughout the decade making record labels afraid of the growing competition.

The Who
The Who consisted of the band members: Peter Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon. The Who was a British band that "completed the holy trinity of rock." The Who was granted the honor of performing at Woodstock in 1969. The Who is known for smashing their guitars and overturning their drum kits as a result of their "violent passion" for playing rock n'roll. |
Jimi Hendrix
Jimi Hendrix was known for wowing the crowds with his "experimental sounds" and "outrageous electric guitar playing skills". Hendrix is considered to be a rock guitar legend by many people. He earned a spot for performing at Woodstock in 1969, where he performed "The Star Spangled Banner." |
Janis Joplin
Janis Joplin rose to fame in the late 1960's, she was known for her "powerful, blues inspired vocals". Joplin performed at Woodstock in 1969. Joplin was known for "standing out from the crowd" and she was called a "wild child" by those who knew her. However, her rebellious spirit led to her death from an accidental overdose. |
Beach Boys
The Beach Boys are known for there unique and easily recognizable rock sound. There music features smooth vocal and instrumental harmonies that gave of the West Coast vibe they were looking for. There songs expressed the teenage boy dream of surfing and chasing girls. The band consisted of five members, brothers Brian, Denis, and Carl Wilson, along with Al Jardine and Mike Love. |
Johnny Cash
Johnny Cash was a renowned singer, guitarist, and songwriter of the 1960's. Cash mixed country, rock, blues, and gospel music to create a new sound and style of music. By the 1960's, Cash had become a national superstar, known for his innovative songs with gospel undertones. Cash married June Carter, who was also a singer and song writer. Cash can credit his successful musical career to Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis ("The Million Dollar Quartet") because while he was singing with them they greatly impacted his popularity, making Cash become a superstar of the 1960's. |
